January 26 & 27
Our trip began on Monday morning, January 26, when we left home around 6:30 a.m. After packing all weekend, we ended up with 3 60-pound suitcases plus our 2 carry ons. It doesn't look like much in the photo below but as we found out when we arrived in Kazakhstan it is WAY TOO MUCH once you start lugging it around.
Lyn leaving with the backpack, Mike will bring the rest.
We knew our total trip time would be about 30 hours with two connections in Washington D.C. and Frankfurt. We had booked long layovers between each leg of the flight (6 hours in DC and 4 hours in Frankfurt) and weren't looking forward to sitting in the airport all that time. However, we learned to appreciate those layovers because a snow and ice blizzard hit on Sunday night and we were delayed at each airport due to the storm. The ice and snow followed us all the way to Kazakhstan but we made all of our connections and only arrived 15 minutes later than scheduled!
Where do you want to go today? ...
Free Diet Pepsi and pretzels... Lyn might as well be at work.

Boeing 777, Seats 38 A & B became a second home to us on our way to Frankfurt.
We arrived in Almaty on Tuesday around 11:00 p.m. and were elated to find that all our luggage had made it too! After processing through customs, we met our driver, Sasha, in the airport lobby. After 30 hours of traveling it was great to have him there waiting for us and he helped us get our luggage to the car (which was no small task!). We were taken to our apartment in Almaty. It is very nice and the bed was especially comfortable. We didn't have any trouble falling asleep despite the time change.
